Individually and collectively, women have fought to bring about changes to their situation at the workplace. But truth be told, many companies pay lip service to celebrating women at the workplace. Truly outstanding companies and businesses push for better ways to celebrate Women: to show appreciation, and to strive for gender equality. While you can decide a theme of your own, the day needs to be about appreciating, empowering, and celebrating Women’s contribution to the basic family unit, to people’s lives and the society in general.
Here are some important things you can do to celebrate Women’s day at your workplace:
# 1 – Listen
Gender equality is not achieved by pretending that all workers are the same irrespective of their gender, but it comes from listening to their individual needs. Listening to them will help in identifying opportunities that benefit your company and open a new window for improvement. Women are best supported in the workplace by giving them the chance to express their own needs. Setup an anonymous forum to discuss and hear their ideas, feedback and thoughts. These ideas can be on improving the workplace diversity, business enhancement and anything that is related to the workplace. Get ready for a surprise – I am confident that you will be inundated with ideas that will transform your company for good.
# 2 – Corporate Self-Defence to be Assertive
You read it right – it’s not just about self-defence. Corporate self-defence is extremely important to boost the confidence of women and empower them to unleash their potential at the workplace. Whether corporates agree or not, there is still gender discrimination at the workplace that works against the confidence of several women. Most of it might be coming from societal pressures and behaviours, and not necessarily from your corporate culture. Corporate self-defence will help women to understand and voice against situations at work that deny them their rights. This will also help them to respond well to bullies. Don’t you want women of your company to stand for themselves and be assertive?
3 # – Personal Branding Workshop
A progressive organization helps their women to stand for Authority. A personal brand workshop helps women to explore their core strengths and enables them to set goals and follow through in achieving them thus becoming more authoritative. Importantly, it gives them visibility and exposure with a unique reputation of their own. Increasing self-awareness definitely increases the self-confidence and hence the workplace productivity. This workshop will help women answer some tough questions, such as:
- What do I want to be known for?
- What are my life goals?
- What makes me happy?
- How can I grow faster?
# 4 – Celebrate Unsung Women Champions
When was the last time you celebrated all your unsung women champions at work? Here is a great opportunity. The women at leadership level might be well known, but what really matters are the ones that are at the bottom of the pyramid. You will have people who are silently working away to glory without being recognized. There will be a great musician, sports champion, theater artist, painter, biker. These people will never come out to express their talent. Show them that you really care for their expertise and talent. Find such talent and recognize them. Make them feel proud of themselves and in turn make your employees feel proud to be working with such great talent.
# 5 – Workshop for Men
Again, you read it right. Empowering women is just one part of the equation. The major element of your exercise is to educate men on the true meaning of diversity. Conduct awareness sessions for men on your diversity policy, the philosophy of women at work, their challenges and ways to bridge the discrimination gap. This will go a long way in creating a culture that truly respects women and treats them for their talent.
Bottom line, this is a great opportunity for you to start changing the culture at your workplace. Women’s day is just an excuse and don’t limit it to one day or a month.
I will be more than happy to discuss if you want some more unique ideas to make this women’s day really special at your workplace.
